About Birdbycatch

[Last updated on 10 May 2003]

WELCOME TO THE BIRDBYCATCH LISTSERVER!Archives of past postings:

The Seabird Bycatch Project (SBP) was initiated by the Institute for Fisheries Resources (affiliated with the Pacific Coast Federation of Fishermen's Associations-the largest organization of commercial fishermen on the U.S. west coast) and the National Fisheries Conservation Center, organizations known for fostering cooperation among fishing and conservation leaders to solve problems.

The Seabird Bycatch Project is an information exchange service for fishing industry participants, conservationists, researchers, fisheries and wildlife observers and fisheries managers. The purpose of the Project is to facilitate communication amongst members who are working toward the reduction of net or hook entanglements of seabirds in the course of fishing operations. This work involves participants internationally, with experience in a variety of fisheries.

Our members and advisors include:

1. Conservation groups: National Audubon Society, American Bird Conservancy, BirdLife International, Marine Fisheries Conservation Network and many others;

2. Fishing groups and individuals: Pacific Fishing Magazine, American Fisheries Society, fishing organizations, fisheries management councils and individual fishing men and women;

3. Members from state, provincial, tribal, federal and international fisheries management and natural resource agencies;

4. Fisheries and wildlife observers;

5. Researchers and scientists dealing with fisheries research and management internationally from many reputable institutions.

Appropriate messages would include:

*Introducing yourself if you are new to the list;
*Changes in your work and involvement in seabird bycatch;
*Inquiries relating to seabird bycatch or fisheries that effect seabirds;
*New releases of reports and reprints;
*News of upcoming events such as conferences, workshops and fisheries management meetings;
*Notices of public comment periods;
*Changes in fisheries management that will effect seabird interactions with fisheries;
*Summaries of seabird bycatch working group meetings and other related meetings;
*Personal perspectives on management issues;
*Personal experiences relating to seabird mortality in fisheries;
*News items
*Anything that will facilitate useful discussion and the fleshing out of problem areas in mitigation measures and management regimes.

Reducing seabird mortality in fisheries is well within our means but communication with all stakeholders is essential. We have a wealth of expertise on this list. Use the list so that all will benefit from your hard work. Use the Seabird Bycatch Project Directory to connect with each other so that we can work together to arrive at practical solutions.
