Thank you to the three people who responded with information to my RFI on by-catch of frigatebirds.
Two people with a combined 35 years experience in the Central Pacific reported that they had not seen or heard of frigatebird by-catch from commercial fisheries.
In the Central Pacific, Great Frigates occasionally interact with private/recreational fishers, swooping on lures and fly. At Christmas I.(IO) in the 1980's, there were occasional reports of Great and Christmas Island Frigates tangling in the trawl lines of recreational fishers. To my knowledge, reports of this nature are no longer frequent on Christmas I (IO), but I will look into this further. In April 2003, I did see a dead juvenile CI Frigate (2002 cohort) hanging from a colony tree by light monofilament and gear wrapped around its wing.
So, I uncovered little evidence of large-scale by-catch of frigatebirds. I hope this is a good sign. I am particularly interested in the potential impacts on CI Frigate. Within it's marine range (SE Asia, especially Indonesia) fisheries are prolific, diverse, and hardly regulated. Assessing this potential threat will be quite a challenge. If you have any further information which corrects or augments the above, I would be very grateful to hear from you.
Best regards,
David James
